Gondola tours in Venice: when, where, how, why and…how much?

If you ever spent a few days in Venice, either for your wedding, honeymoon or holiday, you might choose to treat yourself with something very typical of this magic city: a gondolatour on the channels.

In this article you find a historical introduction and some practical advice for couples wanting to enjoy this kind of experience.

The “gondola” is a traditional Venetian boat which has been used at least from the 15th century for private transportation, mostly by  rich people. Common people, instead, could only afford using the “gondolino” (a kind of public transportation service) to cross the Canal Grande from one bank to the other, as most Venetians still do nowadays.

Gondola tours are mostly appreciated by foreign tourists visiting Venice and might be a nice part of a couple photo session

Noble families and courtesans used gondolas to move around Venice, enjoy fresh air at night during summer, parading along the channels,  and  even as garconnière or gambling areas. In order to limit these “dissolute” habits, at the beginning of the 17th century the Venetian authorities decided to forbid colorful coatings and sumptuous decorations and gondolas turned black, a color which was only used for the lower section’s waterproofing layer until that time.

Gondola tours offer a photographer the chance to get colorful and intense shots which are usually much appreciated by couples.

Gondolas are built-in traditional shipyards called “squeri” which (although in limited amount) can be still seen in Venice. The building process requires special craftmanship and 280 different pieces made of 8 kinds of wood.

Gondola tours give the photographer the chance to catch romantic and intense moments during a photo session in Venice

There are several gondola docks all over Venice where you can hire a gondola for a tour. You find one near Santa Lucia railway station, one near San Marco Square, one near Rialto bridge, one along Strada Nuova road, and many others along the small channels all over the city. You can easily recognize the “gondoliere” (the gondola sailor) by his black-and-white striped shirt and straw hat and by his shouting “gondoooooola, gondooooooola!” to catch your attention.

Gondolas are well equipped to make the tour as comfortable as possible, hosting up to 6 people…which makes things easier for a photographer shooting a couple during a gondola tour in Venice.

Any time of the day and night is fine to enjoy a gondola tour, just be aware that prices are higher at nighttime. Needless to say, the most romantic time is the sunset when gondola renters have the chance to admire Venetian channels and palaces from a different perspective and imbued in a soft light and tender atmosphere. Beside, gondolas are provided with many accessories (carpets, soft chairs, cushions, colorful and carved decorations, etc.) making the journey as pleasant as possible.

Take care of choosing the tour route which is most suitable to you, since different itineraries are available. Consider the idea of bargain a bit over the price, which is officially 80 Euros (110 Euros at nighttime) for 40 minutes for up to 6 people but might be cheaper during low season times. If you get more expensive offers, be careful: they might be either proposing extra services or else trying to cheat you:-)

Gondola tours are especially popular among foreign couples visiting Venice since they offer a very unique experience. That is why I managed to shoot several gondola tours during my couple photo portraits in Venice, as well as during my engagement, honeymoon and wedding photo services. At sunset, night or daytime, gondola tours always offer the chance to get beautiful photographs which will be much appreciated by couples as special souvenirs of intense moments.

Photo walks in Venice: shooting or being shot?

The photo walking tours I offer give the clients the chance to enjoy an informal stroll in Venice and be photographed in some romantic and less known spots of the city.

There are many kinds of photo walks in Venice: the ones I propose to my clients are basically informal photo sessions aiming at portraying the customers with the background of such a magic and unique city. My photo walking tours are ideal for couples (being them enjoying their season, pre-wedding, engagement, wedding or honeymoon holidays in Venice) or anyone who wants a special photo portrait.

This Russian couple enjoyed very much the informal photo walking tour I offered them which gave me the chance to shoot some romantic photos with an unique background

In these cases I would walk along the city with them, letting them explore the less famous areas as well as the most romantic and attractive spots and photograph the clients along the Venetian alleys, on bridges, in the middle of squares or under arcades.

Pre-wedding photo shooting for an Asian couple in Venice

Alvan and Joyce, a couple from Hong Kong, enjoyed very much their pre-wedding photo service and tried different poses in many romantic spots of the city.

Pre-wedding photo shootings are getting more and more popular among couples from all over the world and are especially loved by Asian people. To ensure an exotic background to their couple photo portraits, the bride and groom leave their city or country and enjoy a short holiday in a romantic environment. There they hire a professional photographer based in Venice and have themselves shot in romantic spots, in most cases wearing their wedding suite.

The bride and groom played with each other on the gorgeous background provided by Venice’s channels and alleys.

As the couple is shot by themselves, without relatives and close friends, bride and groom are usually more relaxed and prone to spontaneously express their feelings. At the same time they are usually very excited due to the new environment and the chance they have to taste in advance the delights of the wedding day: make-up, bridal fitting, photo shooting, etc.

The couple enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere while experiencing a professional photo service, which might have helped them later during their wedding photo shooting.

A nice example of a beautiful pre-wedding photo service is the one I shot for this young couple from Hong Kong: Alvan and Joyce enjoyed a short holiday in Venice before getting married and treated themselves with a pre-wedding photo service. This allowed them to get acquainted with their beautiful wedding suites, discover the city in both its most romantic spots and less famous areas, try different poses and play with each other.

I guess this helped them a lot during their wedding photo shooting back in Hong Kong, making them feel more at ease with the photographer’s work.

Alvan and Joyce changed their clothes in the evening and enjoyed some more elegant and funny couple shots in Venice

They also took the chance to change their clothes and wear another elegant suite in the evening.

This gave me the chance to shoot some more couple photographs with the bride and the groom looking like much more relaxed in very intense or funny shots.

Shooting a couple in fancy costumes: a photo walk during Venice Carnival

Russian couple dressed-up in Cranival costumes in Venice during informal photo walk
Danilo and Mariana chose a special photo session in Venice: they hired a photographer to portrait them strolling in the city dressed up with fancy costumes during the famous Venetian Carnival.

I guess everyone of you has heard wonders about the Carnival in Venice. This is indeed one of the most famous Carnivals in the world due to its unique feature: for a whole week the city goes back to the Serenissima Republic times, people walk along the small alleys dressed up like 16th-17th century ladies and lords and ceremonies typical of the Republic period are performed in many Venetian campi (squares). Italian and foreign visitors crowd the city to enjoy this special atmosphere and the sight of beautiful fancy-dress costumes and masks.

During our informal photo session, we stopped in several romantic spots to shoot a few nice couple photographs.

I lately had the chance to accompany a couple from Russia Danilo and Mariana during their visit to the Carnival in Venice and shot a special couple photo service with the two of them dressed up with elegant Venetian costumes and masks. In order to get the best of this kind of “second honeymoon”, they  reserved their masks and costumes back last November and hired me as their photographer for a romantic  photo walk in Venice.

Danilo and Mariana enjoyed playing and posing with their fancy Carnival costumes during our couple photo shooting in Venice.

We started our informal photo shooting in San Tomà, a square in the Dorsoduro district, not far from Rialto bridge. We crossed several Venetian squares and bridges and squares and stopped in some romantic spots to shoot a few intense couple photo portraits, before approaching San Marco Square where the couple was warmly received by actors wearing luxurious colorful costumes, enriched by precious accessories (hats, masks, feathers and jewels).

Along the way to San Marco Square during our couple photo walk, we met several actors dressed up with traditional Venetian costumes and we stopped for some colourful shots.

Danilo and Mariana enjoyed their informal photo walk very much as it gave them the chance to really taste the Carnival’s unique mood and indulge in jokes and plays as Carnival allows you to do..at least once in a year!

Our photo session in Venice ended with a romantic gondola tour which allowed me to take some photographs of the elegant couple with the background of the Venetian palaces along the Canal Grande.
