Unique backgrounds and intense romanticism: these are the additives Venice adds to your proposal…a special mix for success!

A surprise proposal in Venice, Italy can be a very romantic and there are many locations in Venice that would be perfect. This large amount of options makes it actually more difficult to pick the one to be used.

Some of the most popular locations like St. Mark’s Square or the Rialto Bridge, are indeed iconic but a bit overcrowded in day hours, a gondola ride on the Venetian canals could be very good but requires more planning. If you are looking for a more private setting, there are also many quiet alleyways and gardens in Venice that would be perfect for a proposal or areas that have a beautiful background and are very quiet (this is my favorite category).

Romantic places with a scenic background despite being quiet:

This this is the kind of location where the support of a local photographer may help a lot, there are several in Venice and my advice is to consider the hotel location and where you want to be next in order to make it very easy, especially the part before the proposal as you wont be able to tell why you want to be at a specific place at a certain time.

As a perfect example I’d consider the Island of San Giorgio. Once arrived, there will be few people around and the view is breathtaking: the Doge Palace, Grand Canal and Punta della Dogana lay all across a water basin.

It is possible to get there with a single stop of water bus or with an exciting ride on a water taxi (up to you to build up anticipation with the speedboat or to keep it low profile to make it seem a “normal” day).

Surprise proposal on a Gondola:

Here the main options are two: one easy to arrange but more difficult to communicate without giving away the surprise and the other requires a photographer well proficient in local customs but makes the surprise part perfect.

We could find an “excuse” for me to be in the gondola with you, like a lovestory photo session in Venice, and then at the right moment I would pretend to look elsewhere and while the proposal takes place I’ll photograph from very close and with nobody around. It is easy but I’ll need to be there and she will know that there is a a photographer (a positive note is that this may help letting the surprised person pick outfits that will be perfect for the occasion).

Or, as would be more intimate, we find a gondola place where the itinerary allows good vantage points for photographing you from a bridge or from besides the canal, I’ll be ready and you will get the images of your proposal and your partner’s reaction without any interference, I may as well photograph you again in other parts of the gondola tour.
After the gondola ride we may have some more classic engagement portraits in Venice.

Surprise proposal in Iconic places in Venice

Venice has no shortage of iconic locations like St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge, surely these spots are breathtaking, but can be crowded. For those seeking a more intimate experience, Venice offers secluded areas and quiet alleyways that make for perfect proposal spots.
But there are central and scenic location like the old Caffè Florian right in St. Mark’s square.
Alternatively, we can then devote a few minutes of the engagement session after the proposal for these “Landmark” images.
