The proper pair of shoes for a perfect photo shooting in Venice

During the vow renewal photo shooting I did lately, the bride decided to change her shoes to walk on with a more comfortable pair

Most of the tourists visiting Venice are well aware of it: to enjoy a nice tour of the city, you should not forget a pair of comfortable shoes. Since Venice is no place for cars, anyone visiting it is almost doomed to walk along many alleys and through lots of arcades, going up and down many bridges..till your feet are burning!

Now, when I am hired as a photographer for engagement, honeymoon or wedding photo services in Venice, more often than not I meet people enjoying an elegant attire, be it their wedding dress or just a very nice suite. They understand the shooting as the chance to portray a very special situation and want to look as charming as possible.

During a honeymoon photo service I did for a Russian couple, the lady only wore her elegant pair of shoes for the best shots

This the reason why I often happen to shoot couple with very elegant shoes which in most cases are not really the most comfortable ones. This especially true as for women, who enjoy wearing high heels and elegant shoes during their wedding, honeymoon photo shooting or even during a simple couple photo session in Venice.

A young Russian bride that hired me for a honeymoon photo portrait, only wore her elegant shoes for some special poses.

Moreover, I like to propose my customers an informal photo walking tour in Venice which let them discover some hidden spots in Venice and gives me the chance to make some spontaneous and lively photo portraits.  Therefore it is not so uncommon that during the photo shootings I make in Venice the lady decides to change the shoes, wearing the elegant ones only from time to time when there is a need of a very elegant look. It also happen to me that elegant shoes were removed and the lady, who had not taken with her another pair, just decided to walk barefoot in the high water.

It also happened to me to shoot a bride taking off her elegant shoes to save them from high water in Venice and walking on barefoot!

So, if you ever plan to have a nice walking photo shooting in Venice, do not forget to take comfortable shoes with you!

Amazing Couple Portrait In Venice: How To Get The Most Intense Shots

Irina and Simon felt a bit uncomfortable and awkward during the first shots of their photo portrait in Venice

One of the most common situation during a couple photo service is that the couple do not feel at ease posing in front of the camera. This is mostly due to the fact that they decided to have a photo portrait for their wedding, honeymoon, or holiday in Venice and this is perhaps their first photo shooting (or one of the first) in their life.

Beside, in most cases, they are not familiar with the photographer whom they just met that day and feel a bit uncomfortable about his presence, glances and work.

Irina and Simon posing in a Venetian alley during a couple portraitMy own strategy to overcome this problem is to spend as much time as possible with the couple and let them relax and get used to my presence. First of all, I propose to meet well before the photo session for an informal interview: while chatting in a café, we can get a bit more acquainted with each other and I can get important pieces of information about the couple’s wishes and personality.

LaterYoung couple enjoying their informal photo walk in Venice , I propose an informal photo walk in Venice which let them explore the city, even its less famous areas, and enjoy the daily life of the city: even if we stop in some of the most romantic spots to shoot the sweetest couple portraits, I spend most of the time portraying what they would do strolling around by themselves, as if I were their shadow.

I used this method with a young couple who lately hired me for a honeymoon photo service: Irina and Simon felt a bit uncomfortable, even nervous, in the beginning, which explains the lightly “stiff”,  almost awkward look of the first shots.

However, the photo walk had a very relaxing effect on them: they enjoyed Venice’s markets and small alleys where I even asked them to dance and jump and, eventually, the last shots managed to catch very intense, spontaneous glances and feelings.

PHOTO PORTRAITS IN VENICE: RAIN AS AN ALLY RATHER THAN AN ENEMY

The mirroring effect in the puddles along the alleys might help the photographer to get nice photo portraits in Venice

In most cases, no matter where you are going to shoot your photo portraits, sun and fine weather are strategic allies to get beautiful shots.

This is of course true as for Venice. Sunny weather can help professional portrait photographers getting great shots making the most of light or focusing, for instance, on water and sunset.

Nevertheless, I experienced several cases where rainy days were also useful to get original and impressive shots. For instance, rainy days offer the photographer the chance to make the most of the rain puddles’ mirroring effect.

Beside, rainy weather adds a touch of romanticism to the city, which it is especially helpful for a couple portrait photographer hired for wedding and honeymoon photo services.

SHOOTING VENICE BY NIGHT: THE IMPORTANCE OF WORKING JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT

wounderful Venice setting shot by night
A nice shot of Venice by night taken after a couple portrait photo session

I once heard a renowned professional photographer giving young inexperienced would-be photographers an interesting advice: when you are hired for a photo shooting, first focus on the client, listen to and meet all his or her requests, then, take some more shots just for the fun of it.

In other words, once the work is over, start to work for yourself. In many cases, the photographer argued, the shots of the last phase turn out to be the most beautiful ones and even the clients’ favorite ones.

I would call this “let the passion work for you”. Needless to say, I have my passion for photography contribute to all my photo services and, when I work in Venice, especially in the case of honeymoon, wedding and engagement photo shootings, the passion for Venice is also there.

Anyway, I also enjoy shooting some photos just for the fun of it, planning to keep them for myself rather than selling them to the clients. Well, I must say that in many cases I really get great picks which are much appreciated by the customers.

Lately I was hired as a photographer for a couple photo portrait and, as we walked by the Ghetto Vecchio area, we came across some nice views of a Venice channel and bridge which I shot in the picture you see in this post. The photo was much praised by several clients…thanks to the power of passion!
