An Intimate Love Story on the Venetian Lagoon
There are few places in the world as romantic as Venice at sunset. As the light softens over the lagoon, the historic skyline turns golden, the water reflects the last rays of the sun, and the city seems to slow down for a moment. For this couple, visiting Venice became the setting for a particularly meaningful occasion: a surprise marriage proposal, followed by an intimate celebration and a romantic dinner at one of the city’s most exclusive restaurants.
As a proposal photographer in Venice, I have the privilege of witnessing many beautiful moments, but every proposal has its own personality. This one was especially memorable for its combination of genuine emotion, spectacular sunset light, and the understated elegance of arriving and departing by private water taxi.
It was also a lovely reminder that the most important part of a proposal is never the location or the elaborate arrangements. It is the connection between two people and the moment they decide to take the next step together.
Arriving by Water Taxi: The Beginning of the Surprise

The couple arrived by private water taxi, one of my favourite ways to experience Venice. Travelling across the lagoon offers a completely different perspective on the city, with its palaces, historic churches, and waterfront promenades appearing gradually as the boat approaches its destination.
For a surprise proposal, a water taxi can be more than just convenient transportation. It can become part of the experience, adding a touch of exclusivity and anticipation to an already special occasion. An alternative is a low key arrival with a water bus and then leave with a water taxi.
I was waiting at the agreed location, ready to photograph the proposal discreetly. We had discussed the plan beforehand, including the timing, the meeting point, and how I would position myself to capture the moment without interrupting it.
Once the couple stepped ashore, they began walking together. Within just a few steps, the surprise unfolded.
There is something wonderful about how quickly an ordinary stroll can turn into a memory that will last a lifetime.

The Particular Challenge of Photographing a Same-Sex Surprise Proposal
Photographing a surprise proposal always requires preparation, observation, and a little patience. But when I photograph a same-sex proposal, there is one small detail that makes the experience particularly interesting for me.
Even after discussing the plan with the person organising the proposal during our video call, it can be slightly less obvious from a distance which partner is about to pop the question.
With a traditional proposal, I can often recognise the person who is likely to kneel down from their body language, their positioning, or the way they approach the agreed location. With two partners of the same gender, those visual clues can be less predictable.
Of course, this is a small practical challenge rather than a real obstacle. Careful preparation makes all the difference.
Before the session, I make sure I understand the plan, the timing, and the important details. I also pay close attention to the couple’s movements so that I can react naturally when the moment arrives.
My goal is always the same: to capture the proposal as it really happens, without making the couple feel observed or turning their intimate moment into a performance.
And when everything comes together, the result is worth every bit of preparation.
A Genuine Moment of Emotion
The proposal itself was beautifully intimate.
Once the question was asked, the atmosphere changed completely. The anticipation gave way to emotion, smiles, and the unmistakable happiness of two people sharing an important decision.
These are the moments I value most as a photographer.
The photographs that tell the strongest stories are not necessarily the most elaborate compositions. Sometimes they are the small gestures: a hand reaching for the other person’s face, a spontaneous smile, an embrace that lasts a little longer than expected, or the moment when the reality of what has just happened finally sinks in.
I try to photograph these moments without directing them too much. After all, a proposal is not a conventional portrait session. It is a personal experience, and the images should preserve the authenticity of what happened.
For LGBTQ+ couples, I believe it is particularly important to work with a photographer who approaches their relationship naturally and respectfully. Every couple deserves to feel comfortable expressing their affection and celebrating their commitment.
Venice provides a beautiful setting, but it is the people in front of my camera who make the photographs meaningful.

Why Sunset Is Such a Wonderful Time for a Proposal in Venice
Sunset is one of the most popular times for a surprise proposal in Venice, and for good reason.
The light becomes softer and warmer, creating beautiful reflections across the lagoon. The city’s architecture takes on a different character, while the silhouettes of historic buildings and passing boats create a naturally cinematic atmosphere.
For this session, the sunset was particularly beautiful. The warm light gave the photographs a sense of depth and atmosphere, while the open view across the water allowed me to create both intimate portraits and wider compositions featuring Venice as the backdrop.
I always consider the direction of the light when planning a proposal. A location might look wonderful during the day but offer a completely different photographic experience in the late afternoon.
That is why I prefer to discuss the plan with my clients in advance rather than simply recommend a famous landmark. The best location depends on the season, the time of day, the desired atmosphere, and how much privacy the couple would like.
Sometimes a quieter waterfront location with beautiful light will produce a much more meaningful experience than a crowded tourist attraction.
For couples planning a sunset proposal in Venice, I recommend considering not only the place where the question will be asked but also the surroundings, the light, and what you would like to do afterwards.
These details help turn a short proposal into a complete experience.

After the Proposal: Engagement Portraits by the Lagoon
Once the initial excitement had settled, we continued with a short engagement photoshoot.
This is one of my favourite parts of photographing a surprise proposal. The most emotional moment has already happened, the question has been answered, and the couple can finally relax and enjoy being together.
There is no longer a secret to protect or a surprise to maintain.
We took advantage of the beautiful evening light to create a variety of photographs, combining wider views of the lagoon with closer portraits that focused on their expressions and connection.
I always aim to keep this part of the session relaxed. You do not need to know how to pose or have previous experience in front of a camera. I offer simple guidance when needed, but I also leave plenty of room for spontaneous interactions.
Walking together, holding hands, exchanging a kiss, or simply looking at each other can create photographs that feel much more personal than a series of carefully arranged poses.
The result is a collection that tells the story of the entire experience, from the anticipation of the proposal to the happiness of being newly engaged.

A Private Water Taxi to a Romantic Dinner at Oro Restaurant
After the photoshoot, the couple continued their celebration with another private water taxi ride.
This time, their destination was Oro Restaurant, located within the luxurious Cipriani Hotel.
The restaurant offers a particularly elegant setting for a special occasion, making it an excellent choice for couples who want to celebrate their engagement with an exceptional dining experience.
Arriving by water taxi adds another memorable element to the evening. Instead of moving directly from the photoshoot to dinner, the couple could enjoy the journey across the lagoon, take in the changing views, and reflect on what had just happened.
I love this idea for a proposal because it allows the experience to continue naturally after the photographs have been taken.
The proposal becomes the beginning of an entire evening dedicated to celebrating the relationship, with beautiful scenery, private transportation, and a memorable dinner.
For couples considering a more elaborate surprise proposal in Venice, combining photography, a private water taxi, and a special restaurant reservation can create a wonderfully cohesive experience.
And, of course, the details can be adapted to suit different preferences and budgets.

Planning Your Own Surprise Proposal in Venice
Every proposal is different. Some couples prefer a quiet, intimate moment away from the main tourist routes, while others dream of a grand setting with a spectacular view of the Venetian skyline.
My role as a proposal photographer is to help you find the approach that suits you best.
I particularly enjoy speaking with clients before the session, ideally through a video call. It gives me the opportunity to understand your ideas, hear how you imagine the proposal unfolding, and suggest locations and arrangements that fit your plans.
Together, we can discuss the best time of day, the ideal location, whether a private water taxi would enhance the experience, and how to continue with engagement portraits after the big moment.
If you are planning a proposal with your male partner, female partner, or someone you love, I want you to feel comfortable knowing that your relationship will be treated with the same care and attention as every other love story I photograph.
Venice is a city for everyone who wants to celebrate love, and I am always happy to help couples create a meaningful experience here.
