Shooting a couple in fancy costumes: a photo walk during Venice Carnival

Danilo and Mariana chose a special photo session in Venice: they hired a photographer to portrait them strolling in the city dressed up with fancy costumes during the famous Venetian Carnival.

I guess everyone of you has heard wonders about the Carnival in Venice. This is indeed one of the most famous Carnivals in the world due to its unique feature: for a whole week the city goes back to the Serenissima Republic times, people walk along the small alleys dressed up like 16th-17th century ladies and lords and ceremonies typical of the Republic period are performed in many Venetian campi (squares). Italian and foreign visitors crowd the city to enjoy this special atmosphere and the sight of beautiful fancy-dress costumes and masks.

During our informal photo session, we stopped in several romantic spots to shoot a few nice couple photographs.

I lately had the chance to accompany a couple from Russia Danilo and Mariana during their visit to the Carnival in Venice and shot a special couple photo service with the two of them dressed up with elegant Venetian costumes and masks. In order to get the best of this kind of “second honeymoon”, they  reserved their masks and costumes back last November and hired me as their photographer for a romantic  photo walk in Venice.

We started our informal photo shooting in San Tomà, a square in the Dorsoduro district, not far from Rialto bridge. We crossed several Venetian squares and bridges and squares and stopped in some romantic spots to shoot a few intense couple photo portraits, before approaching San Marco Square where the couple was warmly received by actors wearing luxurious colorful costumes, enriched by precious accessories (hats, masks, feathers and jewels).

Along the way to San Marco Square during our couple photo walk, we met several actors dressed up with traditional Venetian costumes and we stopped for some colourful shots.

Danilo and Mariana enjoyed their informal photo walk very much as it gave them the chance to really taste the Carnival’s unique mood and indulge in jokes and plays as Carnival allows you to do..at least once in a year!

Our photo session in Venice ended with a romantic gondola tour which allowed me to take some photographs of the elegant couple with the background of the Venetian palaces along the Canal Grande.

The couple treated themselves with a gondola tour and I had the chance to complete our informal photo walk with some couple shots with the background of Venetian channels.

A Colorful Photo Portray in Venice: Shooting a Jewish Couple in Traditional Attire

One of the most exciting thing about working as a photographer for couple photo portraits, honeymoon, wedding and engagement services in Venice is that it gives me the chance to work for different kinds of clients, coming from different countries and sharing different cultures.

The first phase of Irina’s and Simon’s couple photo service in Venice enclosed shots in some romantic spots.

It was a real pleasure to hired by Irina and Simon, a young Jewish couple, for shooting a photo portrait during their honeymoon in Venice.  While we were walking along alleys and squares to get romantic as well as informal shots, I enjoyed their sensitivity and refined taste, as well as the chance to learn a bit ore about their culture.

I had the couple relax during some breaks in our informal photo walk in Venice to get them at ease with my presence and work.

In the first phase of our informal photo walk in Venice, they just behaved as most young couples in love: I had them hug, kiss, and dance in many nice Venetian spots, giving them the possibility to get familiar with my presence and work.

In the second phase of the couple photo shooting, they changed their attire and wore traditional Jewish suites which added a touch of color and a special exotic flavor to my shots.

In the meanwhile they had relaxed and were eventually feeling at ease in front of my camera and even felt confident enough to start dancing in a square. That’s why the shots of this phase look so intense and even a bit “exotic”…don’t you think?

A Surprising Honeymoon Photo Shooting in Venice: Dear Bride, Don’t touch the frog!

During her honeymoon photo service a bride was reproached by the watchmen for touching the statue at Punta della Dogana

I was lately hired as honeymoon photographer by a just-married Russian couple. The couple was spending a few days in Venice before leaving the city for a honeymoon cruise and wanted to have high-quality pictures of their stay.

We started our informal photo walk in the city, stopping in some romantic spots to shoot the couple and, in some cases, letting the bride posing alone.

We arrived at the Chiesa della Salute and had some shots thereas well, with the couple sitting on the stairs or standing with the Canal Grande on the background.

Then, while I was not looking at her, the bride approached the statue of a young boy holding a frog which was standing there and touched the frog. Was she posing as Cinderella and trying to kiss and  turn it into Prince Charming?

In any case, she was immediately reproached by the statue’s watchmen.

As we later learnt, the statue is an important piece of art by the American artist Charles Ray sponsored by the tycoon François Pinault. Some critics find it a very creative piece of modern art, other consider it too provocative; some argue that the statue symbolize a look at the future, others argue that the frog hints to water, a key element in Venice … well, in my client’s eyes, it was just something like a toy to play with!

It is so easy in Venice to let art enter as a key actor in your shots….

Amazing Couple Portrait In Venice: How To Get The Most Intense Shots

One of the most common situation during a couple photo service is that the couple do not feel at ease posing in front of the camera. This is mostly due to the fact that they decided to have a photo portrait for their wedding, honeymoon, or holiday in Venice and this is perhaps their first photo shooting (or one of the first) in their life.

Beside, in most cases, they are not familiar with the photographer whom they just met that day and feel a bit uncomfortable about his presence, glances and work.

Irina and Simon posing in a Venetian alley during a couple portraitMy own strategy to overcome this problem is to spend as much time as possible with the couple and let them relax and get used to my presence. First of all, I propose to meet well before the photo session for an informal interview: while chatting in a café, we can get a bit more acquainted with each other and I can get important pieces of information about the couple’s wishes and personality.

LaterYoung couple enjoying their informal photo walk in Venice , I propose an informal photo walk in Venice which let them explore the city, even its less famous areas, and enjoy the daily life of the city: even if we stop in some of the most romantic spots to shoot the sweetest couple portraits, I spend most of the time portraying what they would do strolling around by themselves, as if I were their shadow.

I used this method with a young couple who lately hired me for a honeymoon photo service: Irina and Simon felt a bit uncomfortable, even nervous, in the beginning, which explains the lightly “stiff”,  almost awkward look of the first shots.

However, the photo walk had a very relaxing effect on them: they enjoyed Venice’s markets and small alleys where I even asked them to dance and jump and, eventually, the last shots managed to catch very intense, spontaneous glances and feelings.
