Same sex honeymoon photography in Venice

Thanks to the magic sunset light, the background of Venice and the couple’s passion I could take intense photographs of this just-married couple.

Working as a professional portrait and  wedding photographer I often come across couples shining with happiness and almost ‘filled’ with passion. Lately it was the turn of Courtney and Kari, an American couple, whose feelings were not second to any other couple I have ever worked for but as a change from the usual routine they were both female.

Italy is not yet a country were to celebrate same-sex weddings but for honeymoons is an awesome destination.

Russian couple hugging in photo walk in Venice
The passionate and energetic attitude of this Russian couple allowed me to take some intense couple portraits and arose the passers-by’s  attention

Svetlana and Konstantin  treated themselves with a honeymoon trip and a photo walk in Venice. Since we first met at their top-class hotel Locanda Vivaldi near San Marco Square, I enjoyed their passionate and energetic attitude : they were shining with happiness and love for each other and ready to see the funny side of life.

High water in Venice: avoid it thanks to an app or enjoy it during a photo shooting!

This Russian couple made the most of high water and enjoyed a special honeymoon photo shooting in Venice dancing and playing in the flooded Piazza San Marco.

High water is a common event in Venice, especially from October to December. But you can run into it (or rather… walk into it! ) even in springtime. It is mostly due to an unlucky combination of several factors, such as bad weather, tides, winds and artificial digging works which influence the water in the Venetian lagoon and allow the seawater to flood the city in a short while.

Venice hosts many cafés where tourists can stop for a break while visiting the city or during a photo shooting, as it was the case for this Asian couple enjoying a pre-wedding photo service.

There are many places where you can enjoy a break during your visit in Venice, or during a photo service (be it an engagement, wedding or honeymoon photo shooting): the city has many cafés, bars or restaurants where you can drink or eat at any hour of the day and most of the night.

A surprising honeymoon photo shooting: the story of a bride and her bag

married couple posing during honeymoon photo service at Garda Lake
During a nice honeymoon photo servce in Desenzano del Garda, the groom surprised the bride by giving her as a present a bag she was deeply longing for.

One advantage of working as a professional photographer for couples enjoying their holidays or honeymoon in Italy is that I often come across some nice stories which happen during the shooting sessions.

A few days before the honeymoon shooting at Garda Lake, the couple had enjoyed a great informal photo walk in Venice, where the bride fell in love with a bag which, so she was said, was too expansive for her groom.

Last year I had the chance to enjoy an informal photo walk in Venice with a young Russian couple who after some shots in the enchanting Ghetto Vecchio, stopped in a shop because the bride’s attention was caught by a nice bag which she insisted to buy. After a long discussion the groom persuaded her to give up this idea since, I was said, the bag was too expensive. I noticed the the bride’s disappointed expression…

Before starting the honeymoon photo shooting the couple got dressed in their hotel room in Desenzano del Garda.

A few days later the same couple asked me to have a honeymoon photo sessions in Desenzano, on the Garda Lake. They wore their wedding suites and I shot the couple on this beautiful natural background.

During the honeymoon photo shooting the couple posed in some romantic spots along the Garda Lake.

During the same session, as I was focusing on portraying the bride with her nice white dress and a long bridal veil when, suddenly, the groom arrived at the place, holding a packet with the same brand of the bag we saw in Venice.

As he approached and gave her the present, I was able to catch her face’s amazed and delighted expression: she was almost on the point of bursting into tears!

The bride was overjoyed with the groom’s present and this gave me to shoot their happy expressions and spontaneous feelings.

What do I mean by “a perfect informal photo walk in Venice”?

Yulia and Pavel, a young Russian couple who hired me for a honeymoon photo shooting in Venice gave me the chance to enjoy a lively photo session which can well explain what I mean by “informal photo shooting”.

The couple enjoyed exploring Venice’s hidden spots while I was shooting original couple portraits

This is the kind of photo service I like to propose to most of my clients asking for a pre-wedding, destination wedding, honeymoon photo service, or just for a couple portrait in Venice. It basically means letting the couple careless strolling in the city, exploring its most hidden alleys, squares, perhaps relaxing for a while sitting on stairs or benches, resting in a café, or kissing under an arcade.

We also stopped in some romantic spots to make shots with more “classical” Venetian background

In the meanwhile I make the most of my camera, equipment and experience to get some high-quality shots of these moments without asking the couple to pose for most of the time we spend together. I let the couple discover by themselves and admire Venice’s different faces, sometime suggesting to have a look at my favorite secret spots or play with funny poses, like jumping o running towards each other.

Needless to say, we also stop in Venice’s most romantic spots to make some shots with “classical” backgrounds, like Rialto Bridge, San Marco Square or the Academia Bridge.

Rialto Bridge was also included in our photo walking tour.

Yulia and Pavel enjoyed their photo walking tour very much, let themselves be amazed by the city and spontaneously played with me and with each other: the result is a series of funny, informal and original shots, alongside some more “standard” couple portraits in Venice.

What about you? Are you ready for your own informal photo walk in Venice?

A Surprising Honeymoon Photo Shooting in Venice: Dear Bride, Don’t touch the frog!

bride touching frog during honeymoon photo service in Venice
During her honeymoon photo service a bride was reproached by the watchmen for touching the statue at Punta della Dogana

I was lately hired as honeymoon photographer by a just-married Russian couple. The couple was spending a few days in Venice before leaving the city for a honeymoon cruise and wanted to have high-quality pictures of their stay.

We started our informal photo walk in the city, stopping in some romantic spots to shoot the couple and, in some cases, letting the bride posing alone.

During our informal photo walk, I took some shots of the couple in some romantic spots in Venice

We arrived at the Chiesa della Salute and had some shots thereas well, with the couple sitting on the stairs or standing with the Canal Grande on the background.

Then, while I was not looking at her, the bride approached the statue of a young boy holding a frog which was standing there and touched the frog. Was she posing as Cinderella and trying to kiss and  turn it into Prince Charming?

In any case, she was immediately reproached by the statue’s watchmen.

As we later learnt, the statue is an important piece of art by the American artist Charles Ray sponsored by the tycoon François Pinault. Some critics find it a very creative piece of modern art, other consider it too provocative; some argue that the statue symbolize a look at the future, others argue that the frog hints to water, a key element in Venice … well, in my client’s eyes, it was just something like a toy to play with!

It is so easy in Venice to let art enter as a key actor in your shots….
